Families are invited to join us on the Dragonfly Trail for an easy nature hike and fun scavenger hunt on Saturday, Jan. 11. Meet us at the trailhead at 8:30 AM. The Dragonfly Trail is a 1.8-mile loop hike located near Cave Creek, about 13 miles northeast of Canyon Church. This easy, yet beautiful trail is perfect for all ages with plenty of local wildlife (birds, dragonflies, and butterflies), two small creek crossings, towering cottonwood trees, and a kid-sized cave in the rocks. Since the very beginning when Canyon church was first being planted (2003), prayer has always been an essential part of who we are. We’ve held several prayer vigils over the years, especially during crucial moments in the life of our church family.
In 2012 before we moved into our buildings, we spent 24-hours in prayer over the work that would take place at this location. That started an annual tradition and here we are in 2025, getting ready to dedicate another 24-hours to prayer.
With this focused event, we greet the new year by focusing on God, and bringing our praises and our concerns to Him in prayer. We do this because prayer keeps us centered on God’s will (1 John 5:14-15) and because God hears us when we pray (Psalm 66:18-20).
This year’s 24-hours of prayer event will begin at 5:00 PM on Friday, Jan. 17 in our worship center and continues until 5:00 PM Saturday, Jan. 18. We will be showing a GREATER LOVE, found only through Christ, to women, men, and babies across the Phoenix valley with a Baby Bottle Donation Drive to benefit local pregnancy centers starting on Sunday, January 19. Canyon’s Youth Group (6th - 12th Grade) will be attending the Winterfest Youth Conference in Flagstaff, AZ on Friday evening, Jan. 24 through Sunday morning, Jan. 26.
Winterfest has been active for 38 years now, but this is the first time it has come to the southwest! The organization strives to teach and encourage teens in their walk with God. The teachers and guests that come use real life stories, drama, music, and scripture to make the Christian life come alive to the teens involved and the worship times are uplifting and engaging.

WHY BIBLE CLASSES?
Maybe you’re wondering why we offer Bible classes, when we already learn about God through our weekly sermons. Our classes are a different type of interactive learning environment where you can go deeper into your study of God and his word. You can ask questions, wrestle with ideas, and learn and grow with others. Our classes run for 12 weeks, so that also means you can really dig into a topic or book of the Bible in more depth and detail. Our classes are also a great place to meet and connect with other believers and be encouraged by their shared stories and insights.

There will be a pancake breakfast and quarterly meeting for Canyon’s leadership (elders, deacons, ministers, and ministry leaders ) on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 8:00 AM in the auditorium. At the conclusion of our meeting, we will head over to the Tempe Church of Christ for a Leadership Workshop led by Mike Cope.

Canyon’s Youth Group will be participating in an area-wide youth lock-in, which will be held at Southwest Church of Christ on Friday, December 13 starting at 7 PM and ending on Saturday, December 14 at 7 AM.
Those that cannot stay the entire night are still welcome to join the first part of the event on Friday which will end around 10 PM.

Canyon Church of Christ will be serving at the annual Homeless’ Banquet that will be held in downtown Phoenix in partnership with Central Phoenix Urban Ministry (CPUM), led by Sean McClue. Join us as we invite those experiencing homelessness to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal as our special guests. The meal will be served at CPUM’s Greenhouse.

Sean McClue, current ministry leader of Central Phoenix Urban Ministry, and a former Mexico missionary, is leading a short-term mission trip to Mexicali, Mexico on Nov. 8-11 of this year. Canyon’s Youth Ministry is invited to attend to serve with and encourage the youth group at the local church they will be partnering with. Cradle Roll - is offered for babies up through 2 years of age.
Preschool & Kindergarten - this class utilizes the Hands-On Bible Curriculum.

For our November service project, Canyon’s kids will spend a morning making encouragement cards for the patients who are receiving treatment at the EuroMed Foundation Cancer Clinic, which is our neighbor across the parking lot in the business complex. Stop by the Children’s area of the Education Building between 9 and 11 am on Saturday, Nov. 2 and your kids can make some cards with the provided supplies. The cards will be delivered later that week.

The Canyon ladies are invited to attend the ASPIRE Women’s Conference in Tempe on Friday, Nov. 1 starting at 7 PM. We’ll be having an ALL-AGES Trunk or Treat and Chili Cook-off on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. We’ll have dinner together and then trunk or treating will begin at 6:15 PM. This will be a fun time for our church family to enjoy each other’s company. We’ll also be having a chili cook-off with prizes - so get out those recipes! COSTUMES are welcome but not required. Come dressed up or just as you are - all are welcome! Since this is an all-ages event, we encourage silly, fun, cute, or creative costumes and recommend avoiding extremely scary or gory costumes.
DECORATE A TRUNK - Participating cars are asked to arrive and set-up in the parking area behind the worship building (south entrance, by the kitchen) and have their trunks decorated no later than 5:00 PM. CHILI COOK-OFF - Do you have a favorite chili recipe? Bring your chili in a crockpot (or something to keep it warm) and enter our chili cook-off. Everyone will get to sample and vote on their favorite and prizes will be awarded. CHILI CHEFS - Please be sure to sign-up on the sheet so we can plan out table space, voting cards, etc.

Canyon member and deacon, Matt Kimmerle, has offered to give our church family a guided tour of his grandfather’s private Ford Automobile & Americana Museum on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 9 AM. Connect with God and others! Make plans to join us Friday, October 18 through Sunday, October 20 for a weekend together as a church family in the cool pines of northern Arizona. We’ll be reserving cabins at a retreat center called Camp Ponderosa, located in White Mountains, AZ. The facility includes several amenities and the cost of our stay includes meals that will be prepared for us by the camp staff.

Our brother in Christ, Steve Schmidlap, is now in the arms of Jesus.
Steve and his wife, Trudy, have been with Canyon for over 18 years and it's hard to imagine our church family without Steve. It was so appropriate that the sermon on the Sunday when we announced his passing was on the topic of Barnabas because Steve was such a huge encourager!
For the last 10 years, Steve served as an elder at Canyon. He loved God and he loved and served our church family faithfully, and we’re thankful for his joyful witness. His happy encouragement and gentle compassion will be deeply missed. If there's golf in heaven, we’re sure he's taking in a round right now.
The (Arizona) celebration of life for Steve will be held in our worship center on Saturday, September 28 at 2:00 PM. Steve (Steven) Frederick Schmidlap, 78, died Thursday, July 11, 2024, at his home in Anthem, Arizona. He leaves his wife of 57 years, Trudy Kay McDaniel Schmidlap, his sons, Steven Mathew Schmidlap and Brent David Schmidlap and his daughter, Lisa Diane Schmidlap; his son-in-law, Michael Steven Kagnoff, and three grandchildren, Jacob Emory Kagnoff, Drew Mitchell Kagnoff and Elle Jolie Kagnoff. He also leaves two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
Steve was born the proud son of Bob (Robert) and Betty Schmidlap, on December 5, 1945, in Indianapolis, IN. Steve earned his BS and MS in Education from Indiana University, completing both degrees in four years in 1968. On June 10, 1967, he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart. Upon marrying, Steve and Trudy moved to St. Louis. Steve taught at Spoede Elementary and Conway Elementary in the Ladue School District for 38 years. He touched many young lives during his career.
In addition to teaching, Steve worked in the local grocery store, worked at a summer camp several years, and painted houses (inside or out) year-round. He was a very hard worker.
Steve served as a deacon at the Lafayette Church of Christ in Ballwin, MO. He also served on the board of directors for Christian Family Services in St. Louis, MO, for many years.
When Steve retired from teaching, Trudy and he moved to Arizona. They settled in a beautiful planned community called Anthem where Steve was a golf member and became an avid golfer.
Steve served as an elder at the Canyon Church of Christ in Phoenix and was dedicated to serving the Lord. He was caring and compassionate and loved unconditionally. He treated everyone he encountered with respect. He was witty and brought life into the room.
In addition to golfing, Steve enjoyed traveling, reading, and listening to music and cherished spending time with family and friends. When traveling he particularly enjoyed visiting National Parks and Kauai. He reveled in the beauty of Mount Rainier and made the climb to the summit twice in his youth.
Steve will be missed beyond imagination. A celebration of life will be held at Canyon Church of Christ in Phoenix, AZ on September 28 at 2pm. There will also be a celebration held at Lafayette Church of Christ in Ballwin, MO on October 5 at 2pm.
Gifts in memory of Steven may be made to Christian Family Services in St. Louis, MO or The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Canyon’s Youth Group (6th-12th Grade) will be attending the “Sold Out!” Youth Rally, hosted at Surprise Church of Christ on the evening of Friday, Sept. 13 (6-9 PM) and all day Saturday, Sept. 14 (9 AM - 7:30 PM). The theme this year is “Come to the Fountain.” Registration is $25 and includes admission, dinner on Saturday night, and a youth rally t-shirt. Scholarships are available.

Our education & apologetics ministries would like to invite our church family - especially the youth and young adults - to join us in attending a Ratio Christi hosted event on the ASU Campus in Tempe. Please join us for an evening of lecture and Q&A time with Dr. Frank Turek on Monday, Sept. 9 at 7 PM.
